What Glasses Will Suit My Face?

Choosing glasses to suit your face shape

When searching for frames, do you ever wonder, ‘What glasses suit me best?’ With so many different styles to choose from (we have over 1000!), we understand that finding the right pair can be tricky, but did you know that one of the most important factors to consider when it comes to finding your perfect fit is your face shape? In fact, there are seven common face shapes that are better suited to certain types of glasses frame.

A good way to discover your face shape is to stand in front of a mirror with your hair out of your face and compare it to the shapes listed in our guide. Alternatively, you could even draw the outline of your face onto the mirror using lipstick. It sounds unconventional, but it works!

Check out our Face Shape Guide below, compare your own face shape to the ones listed, and discover your ideal style.

Oblong face shape

An oblong face is longer than it is wide and has a long, straight cheek line. If you have this face shape you should consider the following:

  • Avoid narrow and rectangular frame shapes that will make your face appear longer.
  • Decorative details and contrasting temples will add some width to your face. Ted Baker frames are a great example of mixed colours and textures.
  • Frames with more depth will offset the length of your face, such as a masculine, bold square shape.
  • Or to highlight the natural balance of your face, something feminine with upswept corners will emphasise your cheekbones.
  • If you would like to try some flattering frames before you buy, choose our Perfect Square and Old School free Home Trial packs for men, or our Be Square and Flair and Square Women’s packs.

Diamond face shape

Diamond-shaped faces are narrow at the eye line and jawline, and have broad cheekbones that may be high and dramatic. If you have this face shape, you should consider the following:

  • Strong detailing, such as on semi-rimless frames, will accentuate your eyes and soften the lower portion of your face.
  • Oval frames soften the angular lines of your face – something small and neat.
  • For men: to contrast your facial features, why not try a metal rectangular frame?
  • Try glasses that angle towards the top corner and follow the lines of your face, such as a feminine cat-eye frame.
  • How about trying before you commit to buying? We recommend our Work and Play and Rectangle Rule free Home Trial packs for women who have a diamond face shape. Or for men, we have the Day to Day and Retro-Angle packs.

Square face shape

A square face has a broad, deep forehead, wide jaw line and square chin. If you have this face shape, you should consider the following:

  • Avoid thin, angular and square styles as these will draw attention to your chin.
  • Complement your face shape with large silhouettes such as a solid round acetate frame.
  • Soften the edges with an oval frame, like one of our classic retro men’s styles.
  • A stylish feminine option is a cat-eye frame. This will also soften your edges and add a bit of flair.
  • Our All Rounder and What Goes Around free Home Trial packs are the perfect choice for men with a square face shape who want to give some frames a spin before buying. For women, we recommend Well-Rounded and Around Town.

Heart face shape

Heart-shaped faces have a broad forehead and wide cheekbones that narrow down to a small chin. Lots of shapes will suit you, but your goal is to choose frames that will provide contrast and balance to your face. If you have this face shape, you should consider the following:

  • Oval glasses don’t overemphasise your cheek bones.
  • Try rimless for something subtle that softens your features.
  • Frames wider at the top than they are at the bottom add width to the top of your face without exaggerating your cheeks, for example, our men’s Wayfarer glasses.
  • We have a wonderful range of tapered oval frames for her, with subtle, pale tones.
  • Some nicely subtle square frames can be found in our Perfect Square free Home Trial pack for men, and our Be Square free Home Trial pack for women. These packs allow you to give four frames a spin before placing an order.

Triangle face shape

Base-up triangle-shaped faces have a broad forehead and wide cheek bones that narrow to a small chin. If you have this face shape, you should consider the following:

  • Styles that are wider at the bottom minimise the width of the top of the face, such as rounded square shapes.
  • Another way to minimise the width of the top of your face is to choose a rimless frame style.
  • For men with this face shape, round frames with thinner rims are a great option.
  • Something that isn’t top heavy is an ideal option for women, such as a subtle oval frame.
  • Looking to try before you buy? We recommend our square and round free Home Trial packs. For women, Around Town and Well-Rounded are ideal. A good choice for men would be Old School and Perfect Square.

Oval face shape

Oval faces are well balanced and softly rounded, with a forehead slightly wider than the jaw and high cheekbones. If you have this face shape, you should consider the following:

Round face shape

A round face is fairly short with a wide forehead, often with full cheeks and a rounded chin. If you have this face shape, you should consider the following:

  • Sharper edges create angles and have a flattering effect – think classic square frames.
  • Balance out your features with a strong brow line. Semi-rimless frames are ideal for achieving this.
  • A thick, bold frame with an angular shape is an ideal way for men to complement their face shape.
  • Women’s cat-eye glasses have the ability to add length to your face.
  • By choosing our Work and Play or Rectangle Rule free Home Trial packs, you’ll find a great choice of frames for women to try before buying. Likewise, a good option for men are our Day to Day and Retro-Angle packs.
