Phantos glasses have numerous nicknames. They are sometimes fondly referred to as teacup frames because of their unique curved shape and prominent hinge design which resemble an old-fashioned teacup when you look at them face-on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, these glasses were originally called \u2018pantos\u2019 which is an abbreviation of \u2018pantoscopic\u2019. According to the Collins Dictionary<\/strong><\/a>, the definition of this term is \u2018showing a wide-angled view\u2019. The reason they have this name is because of their unique shape. Phantos glasses traditionally have very wide circular lenses and high hinges which allow clear visibility from all angles.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Interestingly, they are also referred to as P3 glasses. This was the military code they were assigned when handed out to soldiers during World War II. The \u2019P\u2019 stands for pantoscopic and refers to the inward tilt of the frame at the bottom which makes it sit closer to the wearer\u2019s cheeks than the top of the frame. The frame\u2019s practical shape meant the glasses could fit comfortably under a gas mask. The lenses also provided improved vision correction and minimised the amount of glare reflected off the lenses. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, the \u20183\u2019 is a reference to the 3mm variation between the height and width of the lenses, which creates the recognisable circular shape. Their high temples meant the wearer\u2019s eyes could be seen from either side. This feature, in particular, was very important for non-verbal communication between soldiers during battle.
