The rise of the Aviator

Ray-Ban® initially designed its famous Aviator sunglasses for US Air Force pilots in the 1930s. Due to the advancements in aviation at this time, aeroplanes could reach new heights. This meant that pilots could fly at a higher altitude and so, therefore, needed to protect their eyes from harmful sun rays and avoid obscured vision due to the sun’s glare. In 1937, Ray-Ban® created pioneering anti-glare eyewear which had green lenses. The frame was made of plastic and featured the same pilot-style shape we know today. The following year, the sunglasses were redesigned and sculpted from sturdy metal. It is at that time that they were given their iconic Aviator name. Interestingly, the brand Ray-Ban® derives from the fact that these sunglasses could block or (as the name would suggest) ban the sun’s rays. Hence, the name Ray-Ban® was born.

A soaring success over the decades

After Ray-Ban®‘s Aviator became a standard issue for pilots, their fearless style and eye-catching look caught the attention of the public. At first, they were well-liked among those who enjoyed outdoor pursuits such as fishing, golf and hunting. This led to the launch of several new designs. During its successful and sometimes colourful history, this classic style evolved to become one of the most legendary sunglasses designs. By the 1970s, this traditionally masculine frame was reimagined with vibrant aesthetics and softer lens colours. It took the spotlight on the catwalks and would become a strong symbol of power and strength as women reclaimed this captivating style for themselves.

Throughout the decades Ray-Ban®‘s Aviator has continued to be popular with rock stars, musicians and celebrities, as well as legends of the silver screen. This style of eyewear is certainly recognisable. There is no mistaking the sleek, lightweight metal of the frame, the classic teardrop lenses and the characteristic top bar. This design has also be reinvented in many different ways over the decades. Make a statement with a pair of Aviator prescription glasses. Or, you can turn them into pilot-style shades for a truly timeless look – ideal if you’re a bit of a Maverick!

The timeless Wayfarer

Launched in 1952, Ray-Ban®’s classic Wayfarer was intended to offer a trendy, understated alternative to the ever-popular Aviator. Innovations in plastic meant the brand could create a fashionable accessory that was not only practical but also highly fashionable. In the 1960s, this particular style crossed divides and was loved by both the U.S. President and famous rebels who rejected cultural conformity at the time.

By the 1980s, it became a sought-after fashion accessory thanks to some clever product placement. The thick, sturdy shape of the frame was originally considered a masculine design. However, it has since evolved into a key element of culture and fashion. A shining star amongst many Hollywood icons, it has played a big role in the U.S. film industry over the years. Ray-Ban®‘s Wayfarer is also associated with a variety of different music genres, from the punk scene to pop music videos and albums.

Ray-Ban® has redesigned this stylish frame several times, adapting the Wayfarer according to the latest trends. Today, this kind of eyewear is available not only in the classic black colour it is known for, but also a variety of vibrant hues and styles. Ideal as both glasses and sunglasses, you can’t beat the timelessness of this design.

Classic Clubmaster style

The ultimate old-school cool, the classic Clubmaster provides a distinguished and classy look. This classic design is inspired by the original browline style of glasses which were invented in 1947. It became a favourite for businessmen during the 50s and 60s. The browline-style frame made its comeback in the 1980s thanks to popular American television. In 1986, Ray-Ban® created its own version of this sophisticated piece which is now a true retro classic and has since appeared in famous period dramas and TV shows.

Clubmaster frames are defined by their sharp curves, thick plastic detailing along the top of the lenses (or browline) and sleek gold accents. Ray-Ban® added several modern touches to the design over time and they are now available in a variety of different colours and styles.

Round is cool and retro

Thought to be the earliest style of glasses, there is no exact date in history when the classic round frame came about. However, it continues to be a favourite style to wear.

In the Roaring Twenties, round glasses were increasingly popular as materials were introduced and eyewear became more affordable. This classic round shape was favoured by celebrities and in turn, became a common choice amongst trendsetters of the time. Once again, there was a rise in demand during the 1960s. This style of glasses was worn by hippies at music festivals and became a must-have fashion accessory. Circular frames also have deep associations with wisdom and have been popularised by famous artists and intellectuals throughout time.

Round Ray-Ban® glasses have a vintage look and are extremely versatile. They are made from a variety of materials and come in a selection of trendy colours. So, whether you opt for a retro metal style or a youthful acetate frame, you’re sure to achieve an ultra-modern look. After all, the retro look is extremely popular at the moment!
