19th August marks World Humanitarian Day, an internationally recognised campaign that honours humanitarian workers and those who have surrendered their own lives or faced significant risks to help provide aid to vulnerable communities. It was first established by the United Nations General Assembly as a day of remembrance. It commemorates the 22 humanitarian aid workers who tragically lost their lives in a bomb attack on the Canal Hotel in Baghdad 20 years ago.
Every year, this event has a specific theme aimed at creating awareness of the selfless actions carried out by aid workers. Also, the importance of this vital work to civilians who find themselves surrounded by conflict or devastated by a natural disaster. Resources are published, social media campaigns are created and educational classes are hosted at schools annually. The theme for World Humanitarian Day 2023 is The Human Race. The aim is to bring together people from all different backgrounds.
What is Glasses Direct doing to help communities in need?
We believe in treating everyone equally and helping out where we can. As part of the EssilorLuxottica Group, our collective mission is to help people ‘see more and be more’. Glasses Direct believe that every individual has the right to essential eye care and should be free to express their own personal style through the brands they wear and love.
Eyesight is very important and gives humanity the freedom to experience life. Yet, if someone has issues with their sight this can significantly impede their ability to carry out everyday activities. We care very deeply about giving vulnerable communities access to essential eye care. This is why we give our support to Vision For Life™’s Buy One, Give One scheme.
Our ethical practices
We also have a Code of Ethics which ensures we uphold the uppermost ethical standards. As a business, we advocate cultural diversity and believe all employees should have equal opportunities. We also encourage inclusivity and safety among employees. Glasses Direct creates a positive work environment where everyone has the opportunity to build on their skills with access to development and training.
